https://www.discovermagazine.com/mind/who-will-dare-to-challenge-the-hotheaded-naked-ice-borer

The Denver Post
PUBLISHED: March 30, 2007 at 5:15 a.m. | UPDATED: May 8, 2016 at 12:14 a.m.

The best April Fools’ hoaxes of all time have been ranked by the San Diego-based Museum of Hoaxes.

The list rates pranks based on notoriety, absurdity and the number of people fooled.

Here they are, in order:

#1: The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest

Panorama, a respected BBC News show announced in 1957 that a mild winter and the eradication of the destructive spaghetti weevil had led to a bumper spagtti crop for Swiss farmers. Video showed peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. The BBC was deluged by calls from viewers wanting to know how to grow their own spaghetti trees. The BBC actually gave out instructions: “place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best.”

#2: Sidd Finch

Sports Illustrated published a story in 1985 about a new rookie pitcher for the Mets, named Sidd Finch. He could reportedly throw a baseball at 168 mph (65 mph faster than anyone else had ever thrown a ball). Finch was said to have never even played the game before, but had mastered the art in a Tibetan monastery. The magazine was flooded with requests for more information, but Finch was just a character imagined by George Plimpton.

#3: Instant Color TV

Swedish television in 1962 was black and white, and only one channel was broadcast. A technical expert at the station appeared on TV to announce that all viewers could now quickly and easily convert their current TV sets to display color reception, simply by pulling a nylon stocking over their TV screen. He went on to demonstrate the process. Reportedly hundreds of thousands of people tried it, only to be thwarted until real color TV debuted in Sweden in 1970.

#4: The Taco Liberty Bell

The Taco Bell Corporation announced in 1996 that it had purchased the Liberty Bell from the U.S. government and was renaming it the Taco Liberty Bell. Hundreds of angry callers contacted the National Historic Park in Philadelphia, which is home to the bell. Taco Bell announced a few hours later it was a hoax. When White House press secretary Mike McCurry was asked about the sale, he got in his own joke, that the Lincoln Memorial had been sold and would henceforward be known as the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial.

#5: San Serriffe

The Guardian, a British newspaper, published a seven-page special section in 1977 to honor the tenth anniversary of San Serriffe, a small republic in the Indian Ocean consisting of several semi-colon-shaped islands. A series of articles describd the geography and culture of the obscure nation. Its two main islands were named Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse. Its capital was Bodoni, and its leader General Pica. The Guardian’s phones rang off their hooks as callers tried to find out more about what sounded like an ideal vacation spot, not recognizing that everything about San Serriffe involved printer’s terminology. This successful hoax is believed to have led to a long history of other journalism-based April Fools’ jokes in the British tabloid press.

#6: Nixon for President

National Public Radio’s “Talk of the Nation” program announced in 1992 that Richard Nixon was running for president again. His new campaign slogan: “I didn’t do anything wrong, and I won’t do it again.” The announcement included audio clips of Nixon making a campaign speech. Listeners were actually being fooled by impersonator Rich Little. They flooded the show with calls expressing shock and outrage.

#7: Alabama Changes the Value of Pi

A newsletter published in 1998 by the New Mexicans for Science and Reason claimed that the Alabama state legislature had voted to change the value of the mathematical constant pi from 3.14159 to the ‘Biblical value’ of 3.0. Before long the article had made its way onto the Internet, and was forwarded by e-mail around the world. The Alabama legislature received hundreds of calls from people protesting the legislation. A physicist named Mark Boslough was revealed as the author of the article, which he intended as a parody of legislative attempts to limit the teaching of evolution.

#8: The Left-Handed Whopper

Burger King published a full page advertisement in USA Today in 1998 announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a “Left-Handed Whopper” specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. The sandwich reportedly included the same ingredients as the original Whopper but the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. Thousands of customers requested the sandwich.

#9: Hotheaded Naked Ice Borers

Discover Magazine announced in 1995 that a wildlife biologist named Dr. Aprile Pazzo (Italian for April Fool) had discovered a new species in Antarctica: the hotheaded naked ice borer. The creatures had bony plates on their heads that, fed by numerous blood vessels, could become burning hot, allowing the animals to bore through ice at high speeds. They used this characteristic to hunt penguins by melting the ice beneath them and causing them to sink into slush where they were trapped. Dr. Pazza theorized the hotheads might have been responsible for the mysterious disappearance of Antarctic explorer Philippe Poisson in 1837. “To the ice borers, he would have looked like a penguin,” she said. Discover reported receiving more mail related to this article than to any other in its history.

#10: Planetary Alignment Decreases Gravity

British astronomer Patrick Moore announced on BBC Radio 2 in 1976 that a once-in-a-lifetime celestial event would happen at 9:47 a.m. The planet Pluto would pass behind Jupiter, temporarily causing a gravitational alignment that would counteract and lessen the Earth’s own gravity. Moore said if listeners jumped in the air at the exact right moment, they would experience a strange floating sensation. Just after 9:47, hundreds of callers claimed to have felt the diminished gravity. One woman even said she and eleven eleven friends had risen from their chairs and floated around the room.
